Modbook R&D Labs – The Inside Track, Issue No.21

MB_RnDLabs_TheInsideTrack-No21fb-0225Hello my fellow T?pferlgucker (?).

In recent weeks we encountered a sporadically occurring intermittent technical issue involving the integration of the UIPanel assembly (which includes the pen sensor) with some versions of the most recent MacBook Pro base systems. (The UIPanel assembly has been discussed in previous updates.)

Over the years, we have seen similar issues pop up, and we initially devised procedures to catch and fix them, and later — beginning with the Modbook Pro — to identify them during development and entirely prevent them from manifesting in any shipped system.

We felt we were very close to devising a solution on our own that would have allowed us to move forward and hit our delivery date. However, after further extensive testing and some back and forth with our supplier’s engineering team, we decided to use their expertise to apply a few changes “under the hood” and resolve this entire issue for all Pro X base systems, current and future.

This will necessitate a little more work with our supplier’s engineering team, requiring at least one more trip by members of our team to Asia, followed by either upgrades to already existing components in our inventory, or new components built, or most likely a sensible combination of both. We’ve been absorbed in recent weeks with planning out the solution and scheduling, and had to wait for the assignment of engineering resources from our supplier’s project team, which is why we were delayed with this update. However, now our schedule is set and we are moving through this work as fast as possible.

While our quicker internal solution might well have been acceptable, I am much more comfortable with solving this problem at its core, and am grateful to our supplier for reopening this part of the project and developing the appropriate changes. Alas, it’s just going to take some more time to get there.

Until next time,
Andreas & the Team

The Modbook Pro X is a one time, small production volume project to create a tablet mac computer solution based on Apple’s 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro notebook. While only backers of the project will be able to receive the Pro X, we’ll be sharing insights and updates as we advance the project. Follow us on facebook at for notifications our next posts.
